Capturing Motion on a Bike Ride
During a family bike ride on the C&O Rail Trail in Maryland, I decided to experiment by taking a few pictures while riding. This does entail some risk, but I tried to pick straight sections when I had some room around me. I was trying to convey the sense of speed that can come with cycling. To do this, I took pictures at different shutter speeds to blur the backgrounds and wheels while trying to get the rider somewhat in focus. I had the best results photographing a rider about 5 feet to my side using an exposures around 1/15 of a second. I wasn't willing to take my eye off the road long enough to compose the photo, so I used my lens as wide as it would go (18mm). For this picture, I asked my son to ride a straight as he could, matching my speed. Not high art, but certainly fun.
